Funeral services for Vern J. Kalvig, 75, of Northwood, will be 1 p.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City, with burial at Elmwood Cemetery, Mason City. The Rev. Tom Dettmer, associate pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church, will officiate at the services. Mr. Kalvig died Thursday (May 29, 1980) at a Mason City hospital.

He came to Mason City in 1919 from Eagle Grove. Mr. Kalvig was employed by the Great Western Railraod for several years, and from 1931 to 1938 he worked at Jacob E. Decker and Sons, Mason City. He then became a self-employed junk dealer. In 1946 he moved to Northwood where he continued his work. From 1956 to 1960 he had the contract for the Northwood sanitation department, continuing his junk dealership after 1960.

Mr. Kalvig is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Gene (Verna) Weitzel, Refugio, Texas; Mrs. Joseph (Rachel) Gataletto, Orlando, Florida, and Mrs. James (Dorothy) Schoolcraft, Hudson, Iowa; seven sons, Donald, Northwood; Merle, Mason City; Arthur, Northwood; David, Mason City; Elmer, Mason City; Carl, Northwood; and Raymond, Osborne, Kansas; 39 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a sister Mrs. Charles (Mildred) Gilbertson, Waterloo; a stepson Dwane Peterson, New Delhi, India; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Frank (Orliss) Diaz, Albert Lea, Minnesota, and Mrs. Gaylin (Karen) Quam, Northwood; 12 stepgrandchildren and six stepgreat-grandchildren.
