Karl Wilson Wurster, son of Charles and Mamie (Sanders) Wurster, was born at home near Lenox, Iowa on September 29, 1924. Karl was baptized and joined the Lenox Christian Church in 1937. Karl grew up in Lenox and attended Lenox High School. On July 26, 1943, Karl enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served his country during World War II. He was assigned to the USS West Point, a troop transport ship. Karl was honorably discharged on April 18, 1946. He was a continuous member of the Lenox American Legion Parkinson Post 250 for 70 years. After returning to Lenox he worked for a short time at a filling station. Soon he began a career working for the telephone company.

Karl was united in marriage to Jean Keenan on December 20, 1947 in Creston, Iowa. Karl and Jean lived in Lenox, Bedford, Sac City, and Belmond where Karl worked for the telephone company and Jean taught school. While living in Belmond, Karl retired and Jean continued teaching. They moved to Latimer where Jean taught for a few more years before they retired and moved to Mountain Home, Arkansas. Karl had a great sense of humor and was nicknamed “Smiley”. Karl and Jean moved to Mount Ayr and entered Clearview Home. Karl passed away on September 28, 2017, one day short of his 93rd birthday.

Survivors include a sister-in-law Virginia (Fred) Siverly of Clearfield, IA; brother-in-law Karl Marion (Donna) Keenan of Boliver, MO; nieces and nephews: Jerry (Janis) Henderson, Phil (Susan) Hall, Wincie (Jon) Armiger, Nancy (Ron) Brown, Martha (Lewis) Larson, Sue (Ron) Mobley, Ken (Karen) Siverly, Lynn (Paul) Baker, Cheri May, LeAnn (Dave) Storer, Sandy Niebur, Karen Branson, and many great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents: Charlie and Mamie Wurster; wife Jean on December 17, 2012; and a sister Maxine Henderson: brother-in-law Glen Henderson of Lenox, IA; and nephew David Hall.

Memorials are to the Lenox Christian Church and the Lenox American Legion Parkinson Post 250. Services were held Monday, October 2, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Lenox Christian Church in Lenox, Iowa with Pastor Karla Lyddon officiating. Musicians were Lynn Baker and Terry Roberts and the songs sang were “How Great Thou Art” and “He Touched Me”. Casket bearers were Jerry Henderson, Drew Henderson, Blaine Henderson, Jerry Mitchell, Phil Hall and Ken Siverly. Military honors by Lenox American Legion Parkinson Post 250 and the Navy Honor Guard Unit. Burial was at the West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox, Iowa.
