Mary Therese (Harrington) Harkema, the daughter of John W. and Veronica (Michor) Harrington, was born on August 6, 1938, in Waverly Iowa. She was raised and educated in Plainfield, graduating from Plainfield High School in 1956. Her family then moved to Dows, where she met her future husband John, on the Dairy Farm where she worked. On April 8, 1958, Mary was united in marriage with John Harkema at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Williams. The couple made their home in Dows until 1961, when they moved to Eagle Grove.

Mary was a mom and homemaker. She at Schelars Foods and for Fareway for over 30 years. Mary enjoyed baking, cooking, canning and helping John sell sweet corn. Mary was a member of Sacred Heart Church.

Mary passed away on Wednesday morning, August 30, 2017, at Unity Point Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge, at the age of 79 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Harrington and Veronica Holliday and brother, Thomas Harrington. Mary is survived by her husband, John Harkema of Eagle Grove; sons, Dave Harkema of Eagle Grove and Doug Harkema (Nancy Schnell) of Eagle Grove; daughters, Lisa Pliner (Scott) of Otho, Michelle Harkema (Abe Spangler) of Eagle Grove and Patricia Metzger (Brett) of Fort Dodge; four grandchildren, Dani Valentine (Matt), Natalie Pliner, Brock Metzger and Brad Pliner; two great-grandchildren, Kayson and Kinsley Valentine and brother, Paul Harrington (Sheri) of Dows.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 2, 2017, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eagle Grove with Father Jerry Blake, celebrant. Burial in Calvary Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Visitation is Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Vigil service at 4:30 p.m. at the Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
