Helen Arlene (Hansen-Bell) Sampson, the daughter of Peter and Mathilda (Swanson) Hansen, was born on February 17, 1918, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. She was raised and attended country school in the Fort Dodge and Badger area. Arlene married Gordon Bell on December 19, 1941 and they lived in Kanawha until he joined the Army in 1942 and he was lost at sea on February 7, 1943. On October 2, 1946, Arlene married Lewis J. Sampson at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Fort Dodge. The couple resided on Lewis's family farm near Goldfield until they retired in 1979 and moved to Goldfield. Lewis preceded her in death on June 29, 2007.

Arlene enjoyed working in clothing sales in the Fort Dodge and Humboldt area. She served as the site manager for Congregate Meals in Goldfield for 15 years. Arlene was known for her kringla which she sold from the Goldfield Cheese Mart and her home for many years.

Arlene was an active member of Lake Lutheran Church in rural Goldfield where she taught Sunday school and served on many ladies aides committees. She was also very active with the American Legion Auxiliary and was at one time County President. Arlene enjoyed flower gardening, crocheted numerous afghans and created countless "Yo Yo's".

Arlene passed away on Tuesday, August 8, 2017, at her son's home in Goldfield at the age of 99 years. She was also preceded in death by her parents and siblings: Mildred, Harold, Alvin, Donald, Ray, Gladys Lenning and Leighton. Survivors include her three sons, Duane Sampson and wife Cindy of Goldfield, Keith Sampson and wife Charlene of Goldfield and Gary Sampson and wife Robin of Iowa Falls; 6 grandchildren: Jen Smullen and husband Devon of Boerne, TX, Brian Sampson (Tammi Holt) of Sale Creek, TN, Joel Sampson of Goldfield, Jon Sampson and wife Courtney of Bode, Josh Sampson and wife Megan of Grimes and Lindsay Sampson of Waukee; 4 step grandchildren: Heather Tolander and husband Jeff of Mt. Pleasant, Heidi Radkiewicz and husband Jake of Oswego, IL, Justin Ullestad of Austin, TX and Joshua Ullestad of Iowa Falls; 9 great-grandchildren: Jessica, Ana, Ashley, Katelyn, Max, Sophia, Lucy, Kendyl and Keeton and 5 step great-grandchildren: Wyatt, Summer, Tyler, Jaylen and Jayden.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 11, 2017, 11:00 a.m. at the Lake Lutheran Church in rural Goldfield with Pastor Truman Larson officiating. Visitation is Thursday from 5 to 7 pm at Foust Funeral Home in Goldfield. Burial will be in Lake Lutheran Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.
