Dr. Harold F. Albers, 90, died in St. Petersburg, FL, Sunday, July 16, 2017. Born December 1, 1926, in Eagle Grove, IA, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He received his D.V.M. from Colorado State University and honorary Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from Iowa State University. He moved to St. Petersburg in 1971, and later established the Northeast Animal Hospital; he practiced veterinary medicine for 50 years. Harold has authored countless articles about his work with seabirds, pelicans, eagles, and as a veterinary medical consultant on polar bears. His community service is extensive, including establishing the St. Petersburg Audubon Society Teachers Ecology Camp and the Feed the Pelicans Fund; supporting the establishment of the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary, the Association of Avian Veterinarians, and the National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association. He was also involved with the Rotary Club of St. Petersburg, Boyd Hill Nature Preserve, and the International Crane Foundation. He has received numerous awards for his veterinary contributions, volunteerism, and community and environmental achievements. He was an active member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church for several years. In addition to his many community contributions, Harold took an enthusiastic interest in stamp collecting, agriculture, and photography.

A visitation will be held 6-8 pm, Wednesday, July 19, at Anderson McQueen Family Tribute Center, 2201 Dr. MLK Street, St. Petersburg, FL 33704. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am, Thursday, July 20, at St. Andrews Lutheran Church, 1901 62nd Avenue South, St. Petersburg, FL 33712. Memorial Park Cemetery, 5750 49th St. North, St. Petersburg, FL.

He is survived by his children, Bryan L. Albers and Elizabeth Albers Rutemeyer and her husband, William. He was preceded in death by his companion, Mary Brazier. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to St. Petersburg Audubon Society for the Dr. Harold F. Albers Teachers Ecology Camp, 315 15th Avenue N.E., St. Petersburg, FL 33704.
