July 23, 1944 ---- July 11, 2017

Jerald Johnson died of complications from a brief illness at the University of Iowa Hospitals on Tuesday, July 11th at the age of 72. Jerry is survived by his wife, Arlet of Emmetsburg, IA; their children, Kent (Jena) Johnson of Shakopee MN, Mark (Julie) Johnson of Cedar Rapids, IA and Carrie (Kevin) Webb of Shakopee MN. His siblings, Carol Shear, Marilyn Scott, and Patti (Mervin) Berkland. Jerry's extra special survivors are his grandchildren; Taylor, Maddie, Tanner, and Emma Johnson of Shakopee; Wesley, Berkley, Quincey and Bradey Johnson of Cedar Rapids and Charlie and Audrey Webb of Shakopee; and many other family and friends.

Jerry was born on July 23, 1944 on a farm near Eagle Grove, IA to Emory and Evelyn (Hansel) Johnson. He graduated Cylinder High School in 1962 and while in school he enjoyed playing basketball and baseball. After high school he joined the national guard. He then married his high school sweetheart Arlet Berkland and they went on to farm until Jerry's retirement. Arlet and Jerry just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 17th. Inside their family, Jerry was known to make the boys daily bacon and eggs, start Carrie's car on those cold mornings and squeeze Arlet fresh orange juice almost every day. Over the years Jerry loved to hunt, shoot pool, snowmobile, golf and cheer on his favorite driver Dale Earnhart Sr. His later years were spent tinkering in his workshop and watching his grandchildren grow - he was so very proud of his wife, children and grandchildren.

A visitation is scheduled for Sunday, July 16th from noon to 2:30 pm and a private family service at Joyce's Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be given to the Palo Alto Co. Historical Society School, 2407 17th St., Emmetsburg. Arlet has a passion for the country school and because it was important to her, Jerry washed a lot of windows every year before the fair!
