Clem McNally Passed Away at Sumner

Widely Known Businessman Died Monday Following Attack of Flu. Funeral was Held in Emmetsburg Yesterday.

Clem J. McNally, son of Edward McNally of this city, and one of the most widely known young businessmen in northern Iowa, passed away at his home at Sumner at 8 o'clock Monday evening. Mr. McNally's death was the results of a hemmorhage, following a short siege of the flu. Tuesday evening of last week Mr. McNally made a motor trip to Renwick to look after some business in his theatre at that place. He evidently caught a cold during the evening. Friday, not feeling well, he made a special auto trip to Emmetsburg to visit his father. During the day he developed a high temperature and returned to his home at Sumner. He went to bed immediately. A physician was called. During Saturday and Sunday Mr. McNally seemed to be recovering nicely. Monday evening, following a visit from his physician and his close friend, Father John Fischer, he decided to get out of bed and take a bath. After he completed the bath he was overcome by a severe choking spell which immediately developed into a hemorrhage. His physician and Father Fischer were immediately called, but nothing could be done to save his life. He passed away about an hour later.

Funeral services were conducted in the Catholic church at Sumner Wednesday morning, with the pastor, Rev. John Fischer, officiating. There was a large attendance. Following the services the remains were brought to this city, arriving in Emmetsburg late Wednesday afternoon. They remained in the parental home until Thursday morning when at 9:30 o'clock, following brief religious services in the home conducted by the Very Rev. W. F. Mason, they were interred in St. John's cemetery. The Foy Funeral home had charge of local arrangements. The pall bearers were Bert Ryan, Bert Hughes, James Morrisey, Wm. McNamara, Wm. Kerwick, and W. T. Branagan.

He spent his youth in this city where he attended St. Mary's Academy. Following his preparatory education in Emmetsburg, Clement later matriculated in Creighton University at Omaha, Nebr. for a number of years he assisted his father in various capacities in the land and loan business. He later entered into the real estate business on his own and was active in that capacity in many states. He spent several years in Florida, during the boom period.

Mr. McNally was united in marriage to Hazel M. Cass at Cedar Rapids on January 15, 1930. Together they engaged in the outdoor theatre business, a business that had been built up by the bride and her family for many years. Mr. and Mrs. McNally entered the moving picture business a few years ago. They, together with other members of the Cass family, conducted a chain of twelve theatres in eastern Iowa and were contemplating the addition of two more theatres to their holdings at the time of Mr. McNally's death. The theatres owned are at Sumner, Waucoma, Nashua, Stacyville, Renwick, Coggan, Strawberry Point, Arlington, Maple Rock and Lime Springs.
