Funeral services for Vernon J. Bisom, 84, a longtime resident of Jasper County [Iowa] were held March 10, 1992, at Wallace–Pence Funeral Home. The Rev. Jerry Brown, senior pastor of the First United Methodist Church, conducted services. Burial was in Newton Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials to the First United Methodist Church, Alzheimer’s Research or Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Baxter may be left at the funeral home.He died March 6, 1992, at the Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines of pneumonia. Survivors are his wife, Margaret; a son John L. of Juneau, Alaska; three daughters, Shirley (Mrs. Robert) Stitch [Stith] of Huachuca, Arizona, Connie Bisom of Newton and Becky (Mrs. Rodney) Long of Ottumwa; nine grandchildren; 10 great–grandchildren; and a sister, Mae Beghtel of Colonial Manor in Baxter. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Ethel, in infancy and two brothers, Clayton and Clarence.
Mr. Bisom was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Local 147, Truckers Union. Mr. Bisom, a former employee of Colonial Baking Co. in Fort Dodge and Purity Bakery in Newton, was an over–the road truck driver for North American Truck Lines and E. C. Bisom Truck Lines. He received several citations for safe driving. Following his retirement from trucking, Mr. Bisom operated an electrical appliance repair business in his home.
The son of Burchard and Barbara Ann Van Baren Bisom, he was born September 17, 1907, in Reasnor and attended Reasnor schools and a trucking school in Illinois. He was married to Margaret L. Butler July 21, 1932, in Bethany, Missouri. Mr. Bisom lived in Newton until moving to Fort Dodge in 1934, moved to Klemme in 1944 and back to Newton in 1954.
