Barbara Kay Abbott-Peterson, 80 of Forest City and formerly of Eagle Grove died peacefully Friday, June 16, 2017 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, June 22, 2017 at the Eagle Grove United Methodist Church, 421 West Broadway, Eagle Grove, Iowa 50533 with Pastor Michael Slininger of Faith United Methodist Church in Webster City officiating. Visitation will be held 5:00 – 7:00 P.M., Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at Cataldo Schott Funeral Chapel, 505 North Clark St. Forest City, IA and will also continue one hour prior to the services on Thursday at Eagle Grove United Methodist Church. Burial will take place in Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association or in Barbara’s name in care of the family.

Barbara was born October 6, 1936 in Cushing, Iowa the daughter of John and Clara (Azeltine) Hardcastle. Barbara attended school in Eagle Grove, graduating in 1954. She was united in marriage to James Abbott Jr. on June 10, 1956 at the Eagle Grove United Methodist Church and to this union four children were born, James, Brant, Phillip and Ann. Following high school Barbara attended Junior College then Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa obtaining her Teacher’s Degree. She taught at various small towns until settling in Forest City in 1967. Barbara was active in Forest City Schools, Eastern Star and raising her four children.

Following the death of her husband James on January 10, 1988 she moved back to Eagle Grove and she taught school in Webster City. On April 23, 1992, she married Harold “Pete” Peterson at the Little Church of the West in Las Vegas, NV. Barbara moved back to Forest City in 2008 where she resided at Forest Plaza Assisted Living and then to Country Meadow Place in Mason City. Barbara enjoyed listening to music, traveling and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her four children, Jay (Cynthia-Kyff) Abbott of Coram, NY, Brant (Kim Dodd) Abbott of Forest City, Phillip Abbott and Ann (Danny) Finer of Forest City; grandchildren, Korey, Tara and Troy Abbott, Tyler Finer; step-granddaughter, Paige Dodd; great-granddaughter, Brianna Jacobsen and step great-granddaughter, Daesha Dodd; two sisters-in-law, Joyce Abbott of Mesa, AZ and Shirley Hardcastle of Fort Dodge and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James Abbott Jr.; second husband, Harold “Pete” Peterson; brother, Jack Hardcastle and brother-in-law, Phil Abbott.

Arrangements are with Cataldo Schott Funeral Home in Forest City.
