Nels, the son of Peter and Lillian (Johnson) Stumo, was born June 26, 1937, in Worth County, Northwood, IA. He grew up in the Elk Creek Lutheran Church-Kensett, IA, where he was baptized and confirmed. Upon his graduation from Kensett High School in 1955, he worked for Decker’s in Mason City, before enlisting in the U.S. Army on April 26, 1957. Nels complete his active duty and was transferred in the Army Reserves. He was a Private First Class at the time he was Honorably Discharged from the service in 1959. Upon returning to civilian life, Nelson was united in marriage to ElNora Johnson on August 29, 1959, at First Lutheran Church of Glenville, MN. To this union, three children were born: Justine, Rocky and Jody. As a young man Nelson enjoyed and had a passion for cars and speed. He love the competition and the thrill of the earth shaking power and adrenaline rush of racing dragsters often reaching speeds near 200 mph. He and ElNore “Elly” as many know her, enjoyed many years rendezvousing, and still have many great friendships they made doing so. Nels had a fondness and love for guns. His knowledge of guns was vast and many who knew him often went to him for advice. He was very proud of his self-built shooting range which is still used by many to this day. He also made and reloaded ammunitions for himself and friends. He taught his grandchildren how to shoot and use guns properly. They grew up with him shooting at the farm, and affectionately refer to him as “Papa Boom”.
Nels was proud of his Norwegian heritage, his ability to both spin and factually tell stories in a wide range of eras, segments, and the like. He was often referenced by his family as a man who had forgotten more knowledge then most people learn in a lifetime. He was always up for “Happy Time” and later years could be found cruising in “Old Red” about the countryside. Nels loved classic country music and looked forward to attending many of Cabin Fever’s gigs over the years. Another pastime was a relaxing outing to Cattlemen’s for Tex-Mex Night. He will be remembered for always taking time for others, being a man of many adventures, full of advice, honesty, and also frugality. He loved to help others and if you were fortunate enough to be his friend it was a bond that lasted for life. Nels had been active in various organizations including the Wright County Gun Club, SASS-Single Action Shooter’s Society, Big Marsh Muzzleloaders, and the NRA.
