Memorial services for Eugene T. (Gene) Smith, 92, of The Village in Indianola, who died Sunday, February 26, 2017, will be held 4:30 p.m., Friday, March 3 at The Village in Indianola. His body was donated to the University of Iowa Body Donation Program for research.

Gene was born [March 28, 1924] and raised on a farm near Clemons, IA, graduated from Clemons High School and Iowa State University. He married Eleanor J. Koster and they had two children, Scott and Sana Kay. They lived in Clarion, Gladbrook, Vinton and Perry before moving to Indianola in 1965. Gene became president of Warren County Brenton Bank, retiring in 1987 to help organize The Village, a Continuing Care Retirement Community. Gene was the Treasurer for the City of Indianola, and a trustee of Simpson College. He was active in the Methodist Church, Rotary Club, National Balloon Museum, Warren County Historical Society and was a Mason. He was also active in the Friendship Force, traveling to England, Japan, Korea, Australia and Belgium. He hosted guests from England, Korea, Australia and Venezuela.

Survivors include his wife, Eleanor; son, Scott AhlSmith of Tacoma, WA; three grandchildren and two great-granddaughters and a son-in-law Duane Danielson. He was preceded in death by his daughter Sana Kay Danielson. Memorial contributions may be made in Gene’s name to The Village Good Shepherd Endowment Fund.
