Elwood Lawrence Gray was born October 13, 1908, one of 12 children born to Bill and Kate Sullivan Gray, in Amsterdam Township, Hancock County. In 1922, he moved with his family from a farm near Kanawha, to another farm south of Holmes. Elwood was united in marriage in 1931 to Ruth Dorr of Clarion, at Clarion. The couple made their home of 28 years on a farm in Dayton Township. They then moved to Eagle Grove in 1959, where he managed the Farmland Swine Testing Station until his retirement in 1973.

Elwood was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Eagle Grove; past president of the Dayton Township School Board; Wright County ASC Farm Program; and in 1954, was named "Father of the Year" by the Eagle Grove Chamber of Commerce and the Ministerial Association.

Elwood Gray died January 26, 1991, at the Rotary Ann Nursing Home in Eagle Grove, at the age of 82 years, three months and 13 days. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Robert; and six brothers, George, Elery, Eddie, Harold, Richard, and Eugene; a sister, Verl Darrah; and one son-in-law, C. J. Cooper.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Bill, Fort Madison; and Ron, Kent, Ohio; six daughters, Phyllis Cooper; Mrs. George (Betty) McCart, both of Eagle Grove; Mrs. Don (Teresa) Dodd, Gladstone, Mo.; Mrs. David (Roselee) Sandvig, Fort Dodge; Mrs. Dave (Paula) Eck, Cedar Falls; and Mrs. Steve (Lana) Nail, Iowa Falls; 39 grandchildren; 50 great grandchildren; four sisters, Florence Lynch, Omaha, Neb.; Lila Spangler, Clear Lake; Mrs. Leslie (Ruth) Tveit, Goldfield; and Mildred Armatis, Rockwell.

Funeral services were held January 29 at the Sacred Heart Church, Eagle Grove, with the Rev. Wayne Droessler officiating at the 10:30 a.m. Mass. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Eagle Grove.
