June 3, 1924 --- June 20, 1981

Shirley Maxine Noland, daughter of Orville and Winifred Wills Nelson, was born June 3, 1924 at Kellogg, Iowa and died June 20, 1981 at the Methodist Hospital, Rochester, Minn, at the age of 57 years and 17 days. Shirley received her education in the Shipley School where she graduated as Valedictorian of her class in 1942. After graduation from high school, she attended Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa where she graduated in 1947. Shirley then worked as a home economist in the Mt. Pleasant, Iowa Extension Office. On September 19, 1948, Shirley was married to Bartley William Noland at the Collegiate Methodist Church, Ames, Iowa. They made their home in Eagle Grove for several years. In 1962 the family moved to Corydon, Iowa where Shirley was a social worker for Decatur County and was active as a girl scout leader. In 1970, they moved to Jefferson, Iowa. Shirley received her masters degree in Adult Education from Iowa State University in 1976. She worked for Whirlpool demonstrating and teaching microwave cooking and was Regional Director for Conway Diet Institute of Iowa.

Shirley and Bartley were the parents of seven children, a son who died in infancy, Gregory, Gerald, Douglas, Lynn, Bruce and Sharon. Shirley was a member of First United Methodist Church, Jefferson, Iowa where she was active in church work. She was former County Chairman of the Greene Co. Democratic Party, former Secretary of Farmer's Union in Greene Co., and a former member of Eastern Star and Phi Kappa Educational Honorary Society.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son in 1958 and son Gregory in 1978. She is survived by her husband, Bartley of Jefferson, Iowa; four sons, Gerald Noland and his wife Laura of Des Moines, Iowa; Douglas, Lynn and Bruce all of Jefferson, Iowa; one daughter, Sharon (Mrs. Tim) Leuthouser of Coon Rapids, Iowa; two grandsons, Eric and Jonathan Noland of Des Moines, Iowa; one brother, Vernon Nelson and his wife
Barbara of Marengo, Iowa and three sisters, Virginia (Mrs. James) Martin of Fresno, Calif.; Anita (Mrs. Gail) Sesker of Fort Scott, Kansas and Connie (Mrs. John) Crouse of Sapulpa, Oklahoma. Hastings Funeral Home, Jefferson, Iowa was in charge of services. The Nolands are former residents of Eagle Grove.
