Helen D. Dorr, 95, of Belmond passed away Monday, May 29, 2017 at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, June 1, 2017 at 2:30 PM at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 1207 3rd St NE in Belmond, with Monsignor John Hemann officiating. Burial will take place at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery in Belmond. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 1, 2017 from 1:00 PM until 2:30 PM, with a Rosary beginning at 1:00 PM at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond.
Helen D. Dorr, daughter of Adolph J. and Anna (Sullivan) Dorr, was born on January 29, 1922, on the family farm north of Belmond. She attended Belmond Schools and graduated with the class of 1940. She earned a BA degree in education at Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) and an MS degree in education at Mankato State University. She first taught in rural schools near Belmond, then elementary grades at Swaledale, Clear Lake, Eagle Grove, and Mason City.
Helen was a life-long member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. She was an active member of the Rosary Society and Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She was a member of various civic and professional organizations. In retirement, Helen enjoyed volunteering.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers – Earl, Otto, Arthur, and Charles; two sisters – Corene Dorr and Irene Chapman; two nieces – Kathy McMurray and Sharon Hall; and one nephew – James Chapman. She is survived by Joan Montfort and her family; Kathy’s son and family; Sharon’s husband Cliff Hall and daughters and families; James’ sons and families; Arthur (Mary) Chapman and their family; Jerry (Jan) Chapman and family; Richard (Mary) Chapman and family; and other relatives and friends.
