December 18, 1938 ---- May 24, 2017
Jerry Ronald Peterson, 78, died May 24, 2017, at Westhaven Community in Boone, IA, after a prolonged struggle with progressive supranuclear palsy.
Jerry was born Dec. 18, 1938, in Mason City, IA, to Marvin and Madeline (Edgar) Peterson. He was a 1956 graduate of Mason City High School, where he enjoyed playing percussion in the band. He was always a hard worker, starting with delivering the Globe Gazette as a boy and working at Kemble’s Flowers in high school. He attended Iowa State University and The University of Iowa. After college Jerry went to work for the Iowa State Highway Commission as a materials inspector. He worked near Humboldt, Iowa where he met and married Edwina Lee Ver Steeg in 1961. Their 2 boys were born while they lived in Humboldt, and later, after they moved to Clear Lake, they adopted a baby girl from South Korea. After brief stays in Indiana and Kentucky, they moved to Eagle Grove, Iowa, where they stayed until the boys graduated from high school. They then returned to Clear Lake where they had a house on the lake. They were married for 31 years before divorcing in 1992. Jerry then married Joyce (Egeland) Hunter and moved to Denver, Colorado. They were together for 15 years before divorcing in 2008. He then moved back to Iowa to live in Boone near his eldest son Eric and his family. He spent his career in the crushed stone, sand and gravel, and asphalt industries. He was a member of the Bower Masonic Lodge in Eagle Grove for over 50 years, and also belonged to the El Kahir Shrine.
Jerry enjoyed woodworking, had a love for boating, and could fix or build about anything. He loved to watch Hawkeye football both in person and on TV. He was always the life of the party and had an infectious laugh.
Jerry is survived by his son, Dr. Eric (Amy) Peterson of Boone, IA, and his daughter, Stacie (David) Hooyer of Chicago, IL; grandchildren Tyler, Spencer, Connor, Mackenzie, and Hailey Peterson of Boone, IA; Zack and Ben Peterson of Emmaus, PA; Anna and Emily Larson of Salt Lake City, UT; and brothers Richard and Thomas Peterson of Mason City. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son Kurt Peterson.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 27, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1309 S. Kentucky Ave., Mason City, Iowa.
