J. D. Reed Dies at 85
J. D. Reed, 85, longtime resident of this community, died at 1:20 a.m. Monday at the Hamilton county hospital where he had been a patient the past two years. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Foster funeral home with the Rev. R.D. Kitterman officiating and with burial in Graceland cemetery.
Jehiel D. Reed, son of Jehiel and Samantha Reed, was born April 9, 1872 on a farm in rural Webster City. He was reared and educated in this community. He was united in marriage in 1897 to Mable Shearer. To this union four children were born: Ida Reed Johnston [Johnson], Iowa City; Helen Granville, Des Moines; Robert Reed, Los Angeles and Hiel Reed. Mr. and Mrs. Reed farmed for a number of years before moving to Woolstock where he was associated with the bank for many years. He was secretary and the first president of the Woolstock Elevator Co. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1913; by one son, Hiel. March 28, 1920, he was united in marriage to Nellie Claude, and the couple continued to live in Woolstock. Mr. Reed was very active in community affairs of Woolstock. To this union, one son was born, Hiel Reed, of Little Rock, Ark. The family moved to Webster City in 1942, and this had been his home since. Besides his four children, he is survived by his wife; also two step-children, W. B. Claude of Elmhurst, Ill., and Mrs. Fred Thompson of Des Moines; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ida Reed, of Webster City. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother. He was baptized in the Methodist faith and was a member of the Methodist church.
