Dallas was born June 8, 1937 to Elmer and Marcele Pals in rural Meservey, IA. He was a graduate of Meservey High School in 1954 and Westmar College in 1958. He taught and coached in Pocahontas, South Clay, Winterset, Meservey-Thornton and CAL, before returning to the farm. Dallas married Katherine (Kaye) Lee on June 10, 1962. They had five children.
He was a teacher to the core, always wanting to teach children how to be better in school and life. His true passion was coaching. It engaged his competitive nature and his love of teaching. He coached basketball and softball, but softball was clearly his favorite. He retired from coaching at age 74 and was inducted into the Iowa Softball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2006. He instilled love and compassion in each of his children. At the time of his death, two of his children and a granddaughter followed in his footsteps -- teaching and coaching.
Dallas and Kaye were blessed to be able to return to the family farm in 1977 when his parents retired. He saw the farm become a Century Farm in 1993 and continued farming until his retirement at age 75.
He was preceded in death by his son Jeff; his parents Elmer and Marcele Pals; his father and mother-in-law Norman and Bernice Lee; his sister-in-law Carla Pals and several aunts and uncles. Dallas is survived by: his wife Kaye of Thornton, IA. His children, Jill and Jerry Hulsing, Grinnell, Iowa; Doug and Julie Pals, Clive, Iowa; Amy and Brian Johnson, Mason City, Iowa and Andrew and Amanda Pals, West Des Moines, Iowa. His nine grandchildren: Ashley, Alyssa, Erica and Emilee Hulsing, Madeleine and Elizabeth Pals, Carsen Johnson, Drew and Aubrey Pals. His siblings, Deloris and Roger Monson, Larry and Darlene Pals and Gary and Mary Pals, his sister and brother-in-law Merle and Jim Hahn and several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be directed to Muse Norris Inpatient Hospice in Mason City or Thornton United Methodist Church.
