Betty Marie Olson, age 90, of Garretson, South Dakota passed away on Thursday, April 6, 2017, at the Palisade Healthcare Community in Garretson. A committal service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, April 12, 2017, at the Summit Hill Cemetery, rural Garretson. A memorial service will follow the committal at 11:00 A.M. at the United Church of Garretson. Visitation with the family present will be from 5-7:00 P.M. Tuesday, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Church of Garretson or a charity of the donor’s choice.
Betty was born on February, 24, 1927, at Rowan, Iowa, to Herbert James and Harriett Louise (Poolman) Lester. She attended grade school in Galt, Iowa, and moved to Clarion, Iowa in 1936 where she graduated in 1945. In the fall of 1945, she moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to work in a café. Betty married Walter Olson on February 24, 1947 in Clarion. They farmed in the Dell Rapids and Sioux Falls areas before moving to Garretson in 1960. Betty worked at the grocery store and school lunchroom until retiring in 1992.
Betty was a member of the United Church of Garretson, Garretson Senior Citizens, Summit Hill Cemetery Association, Legion Auxiliary, and the Garretson Historical Society.
Betty is survived by her sons: Daryl (Penny) of Sioux Falls and Michael (Nancy) of Woodbury, MN; daughters: Sandra Pederson and Susanne (Jerry) Christensen of Garretson, Jackie (Les) Dittrick of Mankato, MN and Jan (Rick) Barnick of Elmore, MN; 19 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Walter, son-in-law, Ken Pederson, four brothers, and an infant sister.
