Anna Ramsvig Handeland

Anna Ramsvig was born in Etna, Norway, May 10, 1854, and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Marion Maricle, near Alden, on April 5, 1932. She came to this country with her two brothers at the age of twenty, and made their home for a time with relatives near Elgin, Ill. In February, 1887, she was married to Mr. Bernard Handeland, at Story City, near which town they made their home for several years. Later they purchased a farm near Hardy, Iowa, where Mr. Handeland died in 1895. Mrs. Handeland continued to operate the farm for 15 years longer. By this time her children were grown and the family then made their home in Webster City for a few years when they returned to a farm near Humboldt. During the last few years deceased made her home with one or the other of her children. She was the mother of four children, two sons and two daughters, all of whom are living. They are Ole and Theodore Handeland, both of Algona, Mrs. Martha Ernst of Rochester, Minn., and Mrs. Marion Maricle of this place. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren and a brother and sister at Togo, Minn.

Funeral services were conducted in the Lutheran church at Hardy, and interment was made in the cemetery at that place. Mrs. Handeland, while not known to our people was spoken of a woman of great faith and courage, who during the thirty-seven years of her widowhood bravely took up the battle of life, raised her children and made a good home for them. Friends of the family extend sympathy to them in their double bereavement.
