Duncombe crash kills 4 area persons

Four area residents lost their lives early Sunday morning in a tragic two-phase auto-motorcycle accident which occurred about one mile north of Duncombe on Highway 20. Officials said the first accident occurred at 1:03 a.m. in heavy ground fog. Webster county sheriff's officials said a south bound car driven by Jeff Caquelin, 21, of Kamrar, apparently swerved into the path of an oncoming pickup driven by Robert Sommerfield, 63, Fort Dodge, hitting the car head-on. Caquelin, Sommerfield and Alice Sommerfield, 64, his wife, were killed in the crash. The three were pronounced dead at the scene by Dan Cole, medical examiner for Webster County. Eugene H. Bahrens, 53, of Eldorado Oaks, Calif., a brother of Mrs. Sommerfield, was treated and released from Trinity Regional hospital in Fort Dodge. Steve Olthoff, 20, of Webster City, a passenger in Caquelin's car, was taken to Trinity hospital for treatment of injuries and was reported in good condition.

About two hours later, according to Webster County Sheriff Chuck Griggs, a southbound van, driven by Roger Dillingham, 39, of Duncombe, ignored warning signs and flashing lights on the highway as officials were still investigating the three-fatality crash and assisting at the scene. The van, according to Sheriff Griggs, smashed into the rear of the motorcycle which was waiting at the scene to get through the crash strewn area. The impact tossed Anthony McCollough, 26, of Duncombe, about 70 feet through the air after he struck his head on the windshield of the van. McCollough was rushed to the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines where he died at 4:20 p.m. Sunday. The cycle was crushed against the back of a car driven by Larry W. Steinbruch, 41, of West Des Moines. Steinbruch received a slight head injury but did not need any medical attention. Sheriff Griggs reported that Dillingham nearly ran over a state trooper and two deputy sheriffs assisting at the previous crash scene. Griggs said that Dillingham had been charged with drunk driving and further charges might be filed. The Duncombe van driver was not injured in the accident. Friends said that McCollough was returning to Duncombe after having attended a party at Vincent.
