Thina Katherine Viola Umstead, the daughter of Hans and Carrie Nelson Olson, was born at Thor, Iowa on October 18, 1901. She grew up in the Thor area and attended the rural schools. On October, 1917, she was united in marriage with Raymond Umstead at Goldfield. The couple farmed near Goldfield until 1924, when the family moved to Eagle Grove, where Mr. Umstead was employed by the railroad. For several years, she was employed at the Wilson Plant in Eagle Grove. Mr. Umstead died in 1978.

While living in Eagle Grove, she attended the Church of the Open Bible and later the Assembly of God Church. She was a long-time member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Retired Railroad Employees.

She died on Thursday afternoon, Dec. 13, 1984, at the Belmond Nursing Home, where she had been a resident since July of 1980. She attained the age of 83 years, 1 month and 25 days.

Surviving are two daughters, Lucille, Mrs. Edwin Smith of Dunn Loring, Va.; Viola, Mrs. Arthur Stockseth of Belmond; a son, Melvin J. Umstead of Eagle Grove, 5 grandchildren; 2 great grand daughters, a twin brother, Theodore Olson of Halstead, Minn.; a sister, Mrs. Nellie Welch of Lancaster, Calif.; and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; a son Marvin Umstead, 3 sisters, Clara, Jennie and Hannah; brothers, Henry Ole, Cornel, Frank, and an infant brother.

Funeral services for Mrs. Katherine (Kate) Umstead, age 83 of Eagle Grove, were held on Saturday, December 15th at 2 p.m. at the Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home. Rev. James Carpenter and Rev. Connie Kleingartner, both of Belmond officiated and burial was in the family lot at Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove.
