Barbara Vey Shinneman Pike, 98, passed away on Friday, February 3. She was born April 25, 1918 to Merle and June Shinneman in Clarion, Iowa. She and a friend worked in Chicago IL after high school. She returned to Oelwein IA and attended Cook’s secretarial school. She married Everett (Mike) Pike and had three children.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Mike, brothers Herbert, Merlin Dell, and Alvin; sister, Doris Shinneman Gorman Pepin, and son David William Pike. She leaves behind son Dr. Lee Pike, Sr. (Mary), daughter-in-law Linda Pike and daughter Jennifer Pike Jones (Jim). Grandchildren are Lee Pike, Jr. (Melissa), Brett Jones (Deanna), Tami Jones Edwards (Shawn), Polly Pike Whitaker (Chris), Heather Pike, Matt Pike (Kami), and Josh Pike. Also 14 great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and many nieces and nephews.

Ms. Barbara had great faith in God and His church. She was a moving force in all the congregations to which she and Mike belonged, the last being the Millen United Methodist Church. She was a member and held office in the DAR of Millen GA. She learned china painting in the mid-1960s and soon excelled; she also painted porcelain figurines. Her paintings were displayed in various settings, including the Millen Public Library. She gave china painting lessons on Michigan public TV and in Twin City and Millen GA. Ms. Barbara never met a stranger and could easily start conversations with someone whom she just met. She lived many places in Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, Arizona, and Georgia. She kept the friends she met, even high school friends, corresponding with them by phone and mail. She was a beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to all who knew her.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 11, 1 p.m. at Millen United Methodist Church and will be followed by a visitation for family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Millen United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 750, Millen GA 30442 or Affinis Hospice, 1365 Interstate Parkway, Augusta GA 30909.
