WAVERLY — Eugene L. “Gene” Gaulke, 90, of Deland, Fla., formerly of Cedar Falls and Waverly, died Thursday, Feb. 2, at Halifax Health Hospice/West Volusia Care Center, Orange City, Fla. He was born July 13, 1926, in Dows, son of Lewis and Erdene (Starr) Gaulke. Gene graduated in 1944 from Clarion High School and attended three years at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. He is a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II, assigned to the 10th Armored Division which was headed for the Battle of the Bulge in Bastogne, Europe. He was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, Eamet Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Ribbon and the Bronze Star.
He married Betty A. Bowman June 5, 1949, in Clarion. She died Jan. 9, 1990. Gene worked from 1956-1961 with Hampton Iowa Farmers Hybrids. Gene then worked as a salesman for U.S. Steel, Agri-Chemicals based out of Pittsburgh, retiring in 1987. In 1993, he married Dolores G. Voorhees, and they later divorced.
Survivors: a daughter, Kathy (Larry) Flynn of Orange City, Fla.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Roberta Gaulke of Des Moines; two brothers, Clinton (JoAnn) of Des Moines and Donald (Norma) of Phoenix, Ariz.; and a sister, Donna Gaulke of Reno, Nev. Preceded in death by: his parents; a son, Craig; and a grandson.
Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly, with burial will be held in Harlington Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Waverly Area Veterans Post Honor Guard. Visitation will be for an hour prior to services.
