VINCENT, IA — Duane “Wayne” M. Engels, 95, of Vincent passed away Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at the Bickford Cottages. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 21, 2017 at Sacred Heart Church, Eagle Grove with Rev. Jerry Blake officiating the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Duncombe with Military Rites presented by the VFW Post 1856 and the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. A visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the church. Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home is serving the family.
Duane is survived by his wife, Ruth; children, Carol (Dennis) Royster of Bettendorf; Cathy (Ralph) Sonnicksen of Fort Dodge; James (Betty) Engels of Yuma, AZ; Rosalie (Mark) Lammli of Stanton, NE; Steven Engels of Waikoloa, HI; Daniel (Patty) Engels of Boerne, TX; Ron Engels (Zane Laubhan) of Central City, CO; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; and brother, Paul. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Elsie (Danner) Engels; infant son, David; sister, Marcille Segar; and brothers, Richard, Robert, and Darrell.
Duane Michael Engels was born July 3, 1921 in Radcliff. As a young boy he and his family moved to Lehigh, where he attended Border Plains School. He then attended Lehigh High School. Following his education, Duane enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942. In 1945, Wayne received his honorable discharge after serving in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters on the battle ship USS New York. Also in 1945, Duane was united in marriage to Ruth Ophiem and the couple made their home in Vincent. Wayne and Ruth raised their family and farmed in the Vincent area for many years. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
