Youth dies in crash near Blairsburg

Auto hit tree early Sunday

A one-car mishap one and a half miles east of Blairsburg on U.S. Highway 20 about four o'clock Sunday morning raised to three the number of persons killed on Hamilton county roads in 1973.

Killed in the crash was Kenneth LaVerne Bentley, 19, of rural Blairsburg. Bentley was alone in his car at the time of the mishap. Officials of the Hamilton county sheriff's department theorized that Bentley went to sleep and lost control of his eastbound car. The car then went into the ditch on the north side of the highway where it crashed nearly head-on into a tree.

Bentley was brought to the Hamilton County Public hospital by the Webster City fire department rescue squad where he was pronounced dead by Dr. Sam I. Kuramoto, Hamilton county medical examiner. The cause of death was listed as a fractured neck and internal injuries.

Funeral services for Kenneth LaVerne Bentley, 19, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Vernon Lutheran church north of Blairsburg. The Rev. David Anderson will officiate and burial will be made in Graceland cemetery. The body will lie in state at the Foster Funeral home until 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, when it will be taken to the church.

Kenneth LaVerne Bentley, son of Harold E. and Maxine Blosser Bentley, was born Sept. 5, 1953 at Story City. He was reared and educated at Blairsburg, being graduated in 1971 from Northeast Hamilton Community high school. He was employed at the Conway Implement Co. in Jewell.

He is survived by his parents; two sisters and one brother, Mrs. Ron (Kay) Hertzler of Lisbon, Iowa, Mrs. Ron (Diane) Weldon of Hampton and Albert Bentley of LaCrescent, Minn.; his grandparents, Mrs. Irma Bentley of Blairsburg, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Blosser of Litchfield, Minn.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was a member of the Vernon Lutheran church [Dows, Iowa].
