September 27, 1893 ---- January 1, 1977

John Oak Chapman, Sr. was born to Willis E. and Anna Cambron Chapman, September 27, 1893 on a farm south of Clarion, Iowa and died at his home, on Monday, January 3 after reaching the age of 83 years, 3 months and 7 days. He was the seventh of eight children. He attended the Wright County schools. He was married to Myrtle Brunton and a son and a daughter were born to this union. He married Irene Dorr of Belmond on October 23, 1934 at Omaha, Neb. and four sons were born to them.

John and his brothers were well known in the farming community and broke many acres of virgin sod in Wright County. He also did custom threshing work in the surrounding area. John moved to Eagle Grove and founded the Chapman Oil Co., Inc. He was active in the business for 40 years.

Surviving him are his wife, Irene; five sons: John Jr., Belmond; G. James and Arthur, Eagle Grove; Jerry, Minneapolis, Minn.; Richard, Billings, Mont.; one daughter, Betty (Mrs. Jack) Howard, Burbank, Calif.; one brother, Oliver Willis Chapman, Eagle Grove; one sister, Grace (Mrs. Art) Grattidge, Boynton Beach, Fla.; 17 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers and 3 sisters and a granddaughter.

A wake service was held Wednesday, January 5 at 8 p.m. at Kastler-Babcock-DeYoung Funeral Home. Funeral services were held Thursday, January 6 at 10:30 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Eagle Grove. Father Norman White officiated and burial was in the Calvary Cemetery, Eagle Grove.
