Ruth Schmalenberger, 94, passed away on Friday, January 6, 2017 at the Friendship Haven Simpson Health Care Center. Private services for the family will be held and there will be no visitation. Arrangements have been entrusted to Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services where friends may call for more information. Memorials may be directed to the discretion of the family.

Ruth Margaret Hofmann was born at Mercy Hospital in Fort Dodge to Wesley and Roberta (Wadson) Hofmann. She attended country school at District #10 in Newark Township and graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1940. She attended Morningside College, Sioux City, and graduated from Drake University. She was a member of Chi Omega sorority, and Kappa Delta Pi (national education honorary), and Kappa Beta Kappa (professional education fraternity). She married Carl Schmalenberger on June 9, 1945 at the Vincent United Methodist Church. Carl passed away October 23, 1991. Ruth lived and farmed in the Vincent community for 76 years before moving to Friendship Haven in 1998.

Ruth was very interested in history, particularly in the Vincent and Newark Township area. She was a great-granddaughter of the Newark Township pioneers. Ruth belonged to the Webster County Historical Society, Webster County Genealogical Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames of the 17th Century, and the Iowa Society for the Preservation of Historical Landmarks. She also was a past Matron of the Eagle Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, past Grand Martha of the Grand Chapter of Eastern Star and a 70 year member of this organization. She had belonged to the Fort Dodge Woman’s Club, the Lauderdale Chapter of Questers, Disabled American Veteran’s Auxiliary, United Methodist Churches, and United Methodist Women. In 2015, Ruth was inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame.

Ruth is survived by her sons Steven (Nancy) and John Schmalenberger; 2 granddaughters, Sara (Matthew) Deppe and Anne (Michael) Morman; and 6 great-grandchildren Emma, Jackson, Addison, and Caroline Deppe, and Ethan and Kaiden Morman.
