Lyle A. Colberg, 94, of Esko, MN passed away Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital. Lyle was born June 25, 1922 to Arthur and Hazel Mae (Crawford) Colberg. He was raised in Dows, Iowa, later moving to Proctor, MN, where he graduated from high school in 1940. On March 16, 1945, he married Margaret Super. The couple was married for 70 years. Lyle was a WWII veteran who served in the Merchant Marines, Coast Guard and Navy. He worked for 20 years in the steel plant in Gary New Duluth in the Open-Hearth Department, retiring in the early 70’s. He worked also in construction, working as a block layer as an independent contractor for 20 years, as well as for Jay Cooke State Park as a staff worker in general maintenance. His hobbies included commercial rabbitry, gardening, and hobby farming. He was active in the Historical Society; he volunteered at the Damiano Center as a cook; started the Esko Community Club; and was treasurer of the new Esko Historical Book.
Lyle is survived by wife, Margaret; children, Loretta Ferree, Gregory, and Alan; 7 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 1 sister, Phyllis; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, and 1 sister.
Visitation will be Saturday, November 5, 2016 from 12:00 until the 1:00 p.m. service at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Esko. Burial will be at Sunrise Memorial Park in Hermantown. Arrangements by Souder-Handevidt Funeral and Cremation Service of Cloquet.
