Belmond is tied to police officer fatally shot in Des Moines

Tony Beminio, one of two Des Moines area police officers killed while on duty in their cars early Wednesday morning, is the son of Frank and Trish Beminio of Belmond. Frank Beminio is a retired Belmond police chief and former member of the Eagle Grove Police Department. He currently serves on the Belmond City Council.

Tony Beminio, a sergeant with the Des Moines Police Department, was shot on Merle Hay Road a short time after Urbandale Police Officer Justin Martin was shot near Urbandale High School about 1 a.m. Martin died in his car. Beminio died at Methodist Hospital. The man suspected in the ambushes, Scott Michael Greene, turned himself in to a conservation officer in Dallas County about 9:30 a.m. Nov. 2.

The Beminio family moved from Eagle Grove to the Iowa City area so Tony could play football at a large high school. He became a standout on the football and wrestling teams at Iowa City West, graduating in 1996. He was also an AAU junior wrestling champion. Beminio attended UNI, Morningside College, and graduated from Simpson College in 2001. He was then employed by the Indianola Police Department. He joined the DMPD in 2005. He was currently living in Altoona with his second wife.

Tony Beminio's first wife and their three children live in Belmond.

Members of the Belmond community expressed shock at the shooting, and they gave personal and written messages of support to Belmond police officers and members of the Wright County Sheriff's Department at a Coffee with a Cop event Wednesday afternoon in downtown Belmond. The gathering had been planned for several weeks, and people used the time as a way to thank local officers for their service in light of the terrible events earlier in the day.
