Leona Theoline Baker
Leona Theoline Johnson was born July 20, 1913, on a farm northwest of Clarion in Wright County, Iowa. Her parents were Tommy O. and Louise Johnson Johnson. She grew up and attended country schools in Norway Township. She attended high school in Clarion. In 1970, she received her high school equivalency from Iowa Central College in Eagle Grove, Iowa. On November 12, 1932, she and Donald E. Baker were united in marriage at her parents farm in Norway Township. They first lived at Belmond, Iowa, and then moved to a farm in Norway Township in 1940. In 1960, they moved to a farm in Boone Township and then to Goldfield, Iowa, in 1972. They retired in 1980. Mr. Baker died in 1991, and she moved to the Rotary Ann Apartments in Eagle Grove. She had been in the care center for the past several months. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church and was a member until it closed. She then went to Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove and was active in the ladies groups of the church. She was a member of the Home Study Club and a former 4-H Leader. She was also a representative for AVON.Leona T. Baker died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at Rotary Ann Nursing Home in Eagle Grove at the age of 85. Survivors include one son, Donavon and wife, Shirley, of Kanawha, Iowa; one daughter, Jane Wallestad and husband, Dean, of Moorland, Iowa; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Howard Johnson of Leland, Iowa; and four sisters, Edith Burras of Kanawha, Ethel Arthur and Ruth Katuin of Madera, Calif., and Frances Swanson of Williams, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, and four brothers, Chester, Lawrence, Cleo, and John.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 5, 1999, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Belmond, with Reverend Lowell Halvorson officiating. Burial was held in the Norway Township Cemetery in rural Belmond. Willim Funeral Home in Clarion was in charge of arrangements.
