Ethel Arthur

Ethel Marie Johnson was born in Wright County Iowa on August 1, 1923; she was one of 5 girls and 5 boys born to Tommy and Louise Johnson. After she graduated high school she taught school for a few years. After WW II she moved to Fresno California, where her brother Lawrence was living, and started work with the telephone company. During her time in Fresno she met Eugene Arthur and they were married in January of 1950. Dale was born in October of 1950 and Lois and Linda were born in May of 1952; she always told us how busy she was with 3 children under 18 months old. In 1958 they moved to 5 acres in Bonadelle Ranchos in Madera County; they bought a two story house removed the top story and moved it to their 5 acres. Over the next several years they spent all their free time putting a roof on the house, building bedrooms on the east side of the house and building a garage. Also during that time Paul was born in 1957 and Mark was born in 1962. Her sister Ruth and John Katuin, their longtime friends Andy and Faye Anderson and dad’s sister Lena and Marvin Wiles all moved out to the ranchos over the next several years. During their time in the ranchos they were very active at Trinity Lutheran Church in Madera and they also started a card club with the local neighbors living in the ranchos; we always remember the good times they had at the card parties. Every Christmas we would get together with Ruth and John Katuin’s family and celebrate Christmas. Mom and Ruth (mom’s sister) would make a wonderful dinner with potato cake and sometimes lutefisk (none of us kids liked this much). We always had great times with all of our cousins. She also worked at the school cafeteria for 13 years. After she and dad retired they started doing crafts together, Dad would make tops and other figures and mom would paint them; they attended a lot of craft fairs and enjoyed meeting people. They also enjoyed going up to the casino every once in a while; this continued after dad passed away when Linda would take her up to the casino, gamble and spend the night and then come back the next morning; she played the penny machines so never spent over $50. She also enjoyed going to Fort Washington with Linda and Robert on Bingo night and going to dinner over at Lois’s house; she always liked an outing with her kids. Mom was really devoted to her kids and always wanted to know how we were doing and what we were doing in our lives. We will miss her very much.

She is survived by her sister Ruth Katuin and Francis and Dean Swanson, her children Dale and Carolyn Arthur, Lois and Gene Dellavalle, Linda and Robert Rose, Paul Arthur, Mark Arthur; six grandchildren, Steven and Debbie Arthur, Sarah and Matt Denson, Matthew Arthur, Vanessa and Rudi Krause, Ross and Helene Dellavalle, Amber and Denny Dumbler; eight great grandchildren Raymond Arthur, Morgan Arthur, Taylor Denson, Abigale Denson, Madelyn Dellavalle, Conrad Krause, Lehven Dumbler, Dashel Dumbler.

Visitation will be on Friday, October 7, 2016 from 2 to 8 PM at Jay Chapel in Madera. A service in Celebration and Thanksgiving of Ethel’s Life will be on Saturday, October 8, 2016 art 11 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Madera.
