July 20, 1922 ---- October 12, 2016

Frances Hoyt Reed, 94, of Burlington [Iowa] died at 10:34 a.m. Wednesday, October 12, 2016, at her home. Born July 20, 1922 in Clarion, Iowa, she was the daughter of Harold and Mary Mechem Hoyt. On August 8, 1942, she married John Wesley Reed of Burlington. He preceded her in death on September 15, 1994. Fran was a graduate of Clarion High School and the American Institute of Business in Des Moines. She was employed as a secretary for a total of 32 years, the last 27 of which were spent as secretary to John Winegard. Fran was the first woman employed by the Winegard Company in 1953, and had thoroughly enjoyed being there to watch the growth and success of the company and to be a part of it. She retired in 1980.

Fran was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Brunch Bunch Sunday School Class, United Methodist Women, Sarah Circle, had served on many committees and the Council, was an office volunteer, and was a commissioned Stephen Minister. She was a member of Chapter NI, P.E.O., and a former member of the National Secretaries Association.

Fran loved her life and the people in it. She and John had spent many years as Florida snowbirds, and enjoyed the new friends they made. They were avid campers, having enjoyed that life for over 20 years during the months they were in Iowa. She loved music, writing, crossword puzzles, movies, travel, feeding hummingbirds and time spent with good friends.

Survivors include nephews, Steven Hoyt of Mission Viejo, CA, Brian Hoyt of Overland Park, KS, and Dennis Hoyt of Ames; sister-in-law, Marnie Hoyt of Mankato, MN; and her very dear friends, Judy and Bob Adams of Burlington, whom she considered to be part of her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her brother, Richard, her niece, Sandy Smith and her nephew, Michael Hoyt.

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Sunday, October 16th, at Lunning Chapel. The funeral service for Mrs. Reed will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 17th, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Melisa Bracht Wagner officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for First United Methodist Church.
