Clarence LeRoy Ball, 78, of Waverly, Iowa, died Sunday, May 23, 2004, at the Waverly Health Center following a sudden illness. He was born on June 20, 1925, in Thompson, Iowa, the son of Clarence E. and Viola E. (Schisel) Ball. Clarence was baptized in March of 1945 and later confirmed on December 21, 1947 at Peace Lutheran Church in Shell Rock, Iowa. He began his schooling in Dows, Iowa, and in 1935 the family moved to Shell Rock where he completed his formal education. At the age of 16 he began working for the Rock Island Railroad, and on November 20, 1944, he entered the US Army during WWII. While in service he was united in marriage to Anna Rose Lewis on March 24, 1945, at Peace Lutheran Church, Shell Rock. Following his honorable discharge from active duty on May 28, 1947, he returned to Shell Rock. He began working for the Purina Factory in Waverly and in the late 1940's Clarence, Anna Rose and their baby, Viola, moved to Waverly, where Clarence continued to work for Purina. In 1952 he began his career at the Shield Bantam Company (now known as Terex) where he served until retiring in 1987. During his years at Shield Bantam he and partner Duane Bahlman also owned and operated a painting business which they ran for many years. Clarence had enjoyed his retirement, spending time with his family, especially his granddaughter CarolAnn, his dog Cuddles, and his church, Peace Lutheran. Clarence loved eagles and owned a large collection of eagle memorabilia of which he was very proud.
Clarence was a longtime, active member of Peace Lutheran Church, Shell Rock. He loved his God, country, and community, and had served all three proudly.

Clarence is survived by his wife and best friend of 59 years, Anna Rose of Waverly; his two daughters and their husbands, Viola and Robert Hartzell of Shell Rock, Vicky and Charles Thompson of Waverly; his granddaughter and her husband, CarolAnn and Mark Bast of Waverly; two brothers and their wives, Gene and Darlene Ball of Geneseo, Illinois, Marlin and Gleora Ball of Waverly; five sisters, Alpha Greenlee of Clarksville, Dorene and Donald Miller of Waverly, Verla and Harry Endelman of Clarksville, Mary Shorter of Cedar Falls, and LaDonna Spencer of Plainfield. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Valora Greenlee, and one brother, Earnest Ball.

Funeral services will be 10:00 AM on Wednesday, May 26, 2004, at Peace Lutheran Church, Shell Rock, with burial with military honors in the Riverside Cemetery, Shell Rock. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Tuesday at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly. Friends may also call on Wednesday at the church for one hour prior to the services. Memorials may be directed to the family.
