Jean Marie Hanshaw, 93, of Waverly, Iowa, passed away early Tuesday morning, May 24, 2016, at UnityPoint Health – Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa.

Jean was born on February 1, 1923, in Mount Ayr, Iowa, the daughter of Hattie (Merrick) and Earl Krouch. In 1941, she graduated from Lake View High School, and then attended Drake University for a year. While at a dance at the Lakewood Ballroom, Jean met Darrell Hanshaw, and the couple was united in marriage on July 2, 1944, at the Methodist Church in Lake View. Jean remained in Lake View while Darrell continued his service in the United States Navy as a pilot. The couple moved to Sac City following Darrell's discharge.

Jean worked for the FBI in Washington D.C. for three years, taught piano lessons to thirty pupils, and served as the Methodist Church Organist in Sac City. In 1957, Darrell and Jean moved to Estherville, as Darrell accepted the elementary principal position, and Jean became the secondary principal secretary. In 1964, she became secretary to the Dean at Estherville Community College, now known as Iowa Lakes Community College, and held that position for eleven years. In 1975, the couple moved to Clarion, and Jean became a secretary at a large farm management company in Clarion. Following Darrell's death in 1990, Jean moved to Des Moines, and then to Waverly in 2006. Jean was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, and an Eastern Star member. She enjoyed music, golf, playing bridge, and spending time with family and friends.

Jean is survived by three daughters, Sally (David) Shonkwiler of Spirit Lake, IA, Sonia (Roger) Heeren of Waverly, IA, and Patricia Epple of New Haven, MO; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two sisters, Margie Good of Leawood, KS, and Mary Becker of Carroll, IA; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by Darrell; a grandson, Erik Heeren; her parents; and two brothers, Dean and Leon Krouch.

According to her wishes, Jean's body has been cremated, and there will be no services. A private family burial, next to Darrell, will be at a later date in Oakland Cemetery, Sac City, IA. Memorials may be directed to Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community, 1922 5th Ave NW, Waverly, IA 50677. Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly is assisting the family.
