Former Monroe Physician Dies

Dr. Frank L. Smith, former Monroe doctor passed away Thursday, Feb. 17, on his 88th birthday. He had retired from practice in Newton in 1937 and had made his home in Rensselaer, N.Y. Dr. Smith practiced in Monroe prior to moving to Newton in 1914. He practiced in that city 23 years. Dr. Smith was born in Macomb, Ill. He was graduated from Knox College in Galesburg, Ill. in 1887, and Drake University in Des Moines where he received his pharmacy degree. After working as a pharmacist in Clarion, he returned to Drake for his degree in 1899. Funeral services were held at Newton Sunday. Burial was in Eagle Grove. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Dr. Smith’s Funeral Set
Retired Newton Physician

Newton, IA – Services for Dr. Frank L. Smith, 88, retired physician and surgeon and former Newton resident, will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Morgan Loehr Funeral Home here with burial at Eagle Grove. Dr. Smith died Thursday on his birthday of a heart ailment while asleep at Skiff Hospital here. He entered the hospital Tuesday following an illness suffered while visiting his daughter, Mrs. Maurice B. Crabb in Eagle Grove. He had retired in 1937 after about 25 years practice here where he founded the Newton Clinic now headed by Dr. John W. Billingsley, his former associate. Prior to coming to Newton, he practiced at Winterset, Des Moines and Monroe. Since retirement, he has lived at Rensselaer, N.Y. Doctor Smith was a charter member of the Newton Rotary Club, a member of all leading organizations, various civic groups here and the national, state and county medical associations. Survivors are his wife, Katherine, another daughter, Mrs. Edward L. Cooper, both of Rensselaer, and two grandchildren at Eagle Grove.

FORMER WINTERSET PHYSICIAN IS DEAD

Dr. Frank L. Smith, 88, retired physician and surgeon, and former Winterset resident, died Thursday, February 17th, at the Skiff hospital in Newton. Funeral services were held at Newton, Sunday, and burial was at Eagle Grove. Dr. Smith retired in 1937, after 25 years of practice, at Newton, and had previously practiced at Winterset, Des Moines, and Monroe. The Smiths had lived at Rensselaer, New York, since his retirement, but he became ill last week, while visiting his daughter, Mrs. Maurice Crabb of Eagle Grove, and he was taken to the Newton hospital for treatment. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Carolyn Crabb, and Mrs. Edward L. Cooper, of Rensselaer, and two grandchildren, at Eagle Grove.

Dr. F. L. Smith of Rensselaer, N.Y. died at the Skiff Memorial hospital in Newton on Thursday, February 17, his 88th birthday. He had been visiting his daughter, Mrs. M. B. Crabbe for several days when he became ill. He asked to be taken to the Newton hospital where he had practiced many years. Apparently recovered and feeling much better he died while taking an afternoon nap.

He had had a heart condition for many years and his hospitalization was not considered unusual or an indication of serious illness. The cause of death was given as a coronary accident. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove.

Dr. Smith practiced medicine in Monroe, Winterset, Des Moines and Newton. He was also a pharmacist in Clarion, Iowa for a year or two in the late 1890s. On his retirement in 1937 he went to the Valley in Texas and operated a citrus grove for 8 years. He has since made his home with his daughter Mrs. E. L. Cooper in Rensselear coming to Iowa and Eagle Grove frequently for visits and business trips.

He is survived by his wife, a daughter, Mrs. E. L. Cooper both in Rensselaer and another daughter, Mrs. M. B. Crabbe and two grandchildren of Eagle Grove.
