Wallace Russell Hanson was born June 10, 1919, at Houston, Minn. He was the son of Oscar and Alfreda Magnuson Hanson. He received his education in the Winona, Minnesota School System, and graduated from Winona High School. He attended St. Mary's College, Winona, and the University of Minnesota Minneapolis-St. Paul. He graduated with a BA in engineering from Morningside College in Sioux City. He entered the U.S. Army on October 15, 1942, receiving his training at Boca Raton, Fla. He then transferred to Cadet School at Yale University before serving in the European Theater of Operations in World War II.
He was united in marriage to Clarice (Be) Rohweder of Little Rock, Iowa, on October 16, 1943, in the Methodist Chapel at the Yale University campus. Hanson was discharged from service at Camp McCoy, Wis., on November 15, 1945. He taught school and coached at Orange City High School for five years. He moved to Eagle Grove in 1950 and taught history and physics. He coached football, basketball, track and golf for 21 years, retiring in 1971.
He worked as a field supervisor for Rain and Hail Insurance until retiring in 1985. He continued on a part-time basis in the crop insurance field until his health failed. He was a member of the United Church of Christ, Eagle Grove, and the American Legion.
Wallace Hanson died of cancer, Tuesday, March 22, 1994 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Clarion, at the age of 74 years, nine months and 12 days. He was preceded in death by his father, and grandson, Jeffrey Wallace Hanson. He is survived by his mother Alfreda Dornart, Webster City; his wife; son, Brad of Deerfield, Ill.; his daughter, Trudy Trotter of Hudson; five grandsons, Ryan Trotter, Jereme Trotter, Nathan Trotter, J. B. Hanson, and Curtis Hanson; and one brother, Forrest Hanson of Sioux Falls, S..D.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m.; Friday, March 25 at the United Church of Christ, Eagle Grove. The Rev. Edgar James officiated and burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Graveside services were conducted by the American Legion and V.F.W. Posts of Eagle Grove. Kastler-Babcock Services, Eagle Grove, was in charge of arrangements
