September 17, 1846 ---- February 17, 1927

Mrs. Casander Hazelwood

Casander Smith Hazelwood was born at Lexington, Ill., Sept. 17, 1840, and died Feb. 17, 1927, at Renwick, Ia., aged 80 years and 5 months. She was the oldest of six children and is survived only by Mrs. James Hawthorne of Renwick, who is also the youngest of the family.

Her early life was spent at home on the farm, attending school and qualifying to teach. But the war came on and changed her plans.

In 1860 she was married to Salathiel Henline. After three days of Wedded bliss he enlisted and never returned alive. In September 1865, at Bloomington, Ill., she was married to Joseph Hazelwood, living there 21 years; moving to Eustas, Neb. for 15 years, and in 1903 moving to Renwick, which has been her home.

Mrs. Hazelwood gave her life to God in early youth and has been a loyal and faithful member of the Methodist church for many years. Her husband, Joseph, having preceded her in death by a little over a year, she has kept house alone. She awoke one night suffering great pain and arose from her bed to get some liniment to alleviate the pain, in some unknown manner tripped and fell on the floor, injuring her right limb at the hip. By great presence of mind and sheer grit she managed to get to the phone and call for help; She seemingly was recovering from this accident, when on Tuesday morning she suffered a stroke; of paralysis from which she never fully recovered. All that skill and loving hands could do were of no, avail. Time had taken its toll, the body was to frail to stand the shock.

Another soldier's widow has passed the way of all veterans. For are not these women honored as much as their husbands? 'Tis a man's duty to die' but once but these soldiers' wives die daily.

She leaves to mourn her death, one sister, Mrs. Jas. Hawthorne of Renwick; many nieces and nephews, besides a large acquaintance of friends. The funeral was held last Saturday afternoon at 1:30 at the home and at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church, Rev. R. E. Cook officiating. Burial took place at Luni cemetery.
