Dwight Carroll Savage was born in Woodbine, Iowa on March 21, 1933, the son of Elmer and Ida (Smith) Savage. He grew up in the grocery business with his parents owning a grocery store that was known for their sausage. From that point on he couldn't resist critiquing every grocery store he entered from here to Texas. Growing up and through high school he also delivered the Omaha World Herald. Dwight Graduated from Woodbine High School in 1951 and was inducted into the United States Navy, where he was stationed on the U.S.S. Bryce Canyon AD36 and the U.S.S Maddox DD731. While stationed in California and aboard the U.S.S. Maddox, he played a vital role as an extra in the movie "Return from the Sea" starring Jan Sterling and Neville Brand.

During his time in the Navy, Dwight became pen pals with Sharon Miller from LuVerne. After being discharged from the Navy, he made his way to meet her and the couple later married on September 7, 1957 at the Evangelical United Brethren church in LuVerne. They went to live in Council Bluffs, where Dwight was working at North Western Bell Telephone Company. Then in 1961, he and Sharon moved to LuVerne where he began farming. Dwight was also a rural mail carrier and a field assessor for the Kossuth County Assessor's Office.

Dwight enjoyed carpentry, wood crafts, farm sales, antique auctions, attending horse sales in Eagle Grove and his morning coffee in both LuVerne and Renwick. He also liked stain glass and yard work, but his main focus was always his grandchildren. He made sure he was always in attendance at their activities.

Dwight was a member of several organizations which include the United Methodist Church in LuVerne, a 32nd Degree Mason in Prudence Lodge # 205 A.F. & A.M. in Algona, past master of Paradise Lodge in Corwith, past Commander of the American Legion Ernest Merkle Post #664 in LuVerne, American Legion Elmer Wilson Post #229 in Corwith, the Abu Bekr Shrine in Sioux City, the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine in Des Moines and the Consistory in Des Moines.

Dwight C. Savage, 83, of LuVerne, died Sunday, July 24, 2016, at Windsor Manor, Algona. He is survived by his wife Sharon Savage of LuVerne; two sons, Dan Savage of Lake City, IA, and Jim Savage of LuVerne; granddaughters, Michaela Savage of Cedar Falls and Jacey Savage of LuVerne. He was preceded in death by his parents and his father and mother-in-law, Tommy Miller and Della (Stoddard) Miller.
