Robert Umstead was born August 18, 1915, at Eagle Grove, Iowa, to Samuel and Nellie McCutcheon Umstead. He was united in marriage to Rose C. Rasmussen on July 11, 1940, at Eagle Grove. He worked for the Eagle Grove Community Schools for 46 years. Robert Umstead died on Tuesday, December 29, 1998, at the age of 83. Survivors include his wife Rose, Eagle Grove; a son, Larry Wayne Umstead and wife, Jean, Amana; a daughter, Bonnie Rae Miller and husband, Don, Fort Dodge; 6 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Leroy Umstead, Paul Umstead, and Richard Umstead, all of Eagle Grove; and a sister, Maxine Ziegler, Corwith. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Lyden Umstead.

Funeral services were held Thursday, December 31, 1998, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove with Reverend William E. Ballard officiating. Burial was held in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Willim Funeral Home of Eagle Grove was in charge of the arrangements.
