Thomas Darby Burgess was born March 17, 1901, the son of Cyrus and Sarah Darby Burgess at Princefield, Ill. The Burgess family later moved to Perry where Thomas, received his education in the Perry school system. He began his adult life employed as a farmer before entering the United States Army during World War I, on June 19, 1918. He received his honorable discharge from Camp Dodge, Des Moines on August 5, 1919. Following his return to farming, after the war, Thomas was united in marriage to Jessie Lee Carstens of Perry, in June of 1927, at Perry. He was employed as a Maytag appliance dealer while residing in Perry.

The couple later moved to Fort Dodge, where Thomas and Jessie owned and operated Tom's Ice Cream and Lunch. Thomas then entered semi retirement, leaving Fort Dodge and relocating to Rogers, Ark. For the past 20 years, Jessie and Thomas have been living in Eagle Grove since their return to Iowa from Arkansas. He was affiliated with the United Methodist Church, Eagle Grove, Eagle Grove V.F.W., American Legion, and Masonic Lodge.

Following an extended illness Thomas Darby Burgess died at the Rotary Ann Nursing Home in the early morning of October 18,1969, at the age of 88 years, seven months and one day.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Willis; and one great-grandson, Brett Springer. He is survived by his wife; one son, Robert, San Bernardino, Calif.; and two daughters, Mrs. John (Virginia) Ahrens, Taos, N. M.; and Mrs. Leo (Dorothy) Peterson, Eagle Grove; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Private family graveside services complete with the folding and presentation of the U. S. flag by the Eagle Grove Chapter of the American Legion were held at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove, with the Rev. Scott C. Hall, pastor of the United Methodist Church officiating. Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
