Harlan Max Groves was born on August 8, 1919 the son of Carl and Eva Guthrie [Groves] at Eagle Grove. He received his education at Head Grove School and the Eagle Grove school system. Following his graduation, Groves attended the University of Iowa for one year. He enlisted into the United States Navy on September 10, 1938 at Fort Dodge. Groves served in the Pacific campaign during World War II and earned the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He was granted his honorable discharge on August 8, 1946 at the U.S. Naval Personal Separation Center in Minneapolis, Minn.

He was married to Marjorie Rompf from 1945 to 1972. Groves worked the family farm from 1946 to 1966. During that time, he served two terms as mayor of Eagle Grove from 1958 to 1962. Most recently, he served on the County Board of Review. He also owned and operated H. Max Groves Realty in Eagle Grove.

He married Lorraine Elher Brandrup April 9, 1988 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Webster City. The couple made their home in Eagle Grove.

H. Max Groves died at his home during the early morning of June 22, 1994. He had attained the age of 74 years, 10 months, and 14 days.

He is survived by his, wife, Lorraine of Eagle Grove; sons, Jason Groves and wife Betsy of Rapid City, S.D. and Richard Groves of Phoenix, Ariz.; daughter, Barbara Jean Groves of DeKalb, Ill.; stepsons, Michael Brandrup and John Brandrup, both of Webster City; two brothers, Harry Groves and wife Gladys of Eagle Grove and Howard Groves and wife Iris of Clarion; and one sister, Doris Groves of Palm Desert, Calif. Groves was preceded in death by his parents.

He was a member of the Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Eagle Grove V.F.W. and American Legion, the Masonic Lodge, the Elks Club, and the Eagle Grove Country Club.

Funeral services for H. Max Groves were held on Friday, June 24,1994 at the Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran Church. The Revs. Lyle Peters and Maynard Moen officiated the 10:30 a m services. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Willim Funeral Home of Eagle Grove was in charge of arrangements.
