A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 5, 2016, at Oakcrest Funeral Services, Algona, Iowa, with Reverend Dr. Glenn Wilson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be held following the service at Burt Township Cemetery.

Velma Berniece Marlow was born August 22, 1912 in Redfield, SD, the daughter of Edward and Clara (Hutchinson) Marlow. Velma graduated from High School in Rockham, SD, and later received her Associates degree in business from Aberdeen, SD, which was uncommon for women in those days.

Velma was married to Paul Olson in Webster, SD, on April 22, 1932 and later divorced in 1962. To this union three children were born. She was then united in marriage to Cliff Holding on December 6, 1963 in Blue Earth, MN.

She was able to apply her knowledge of business throughout her working career. Velma worked as a secretary at the Burt School, worked for Millers Clothing in Blue Earth, MN, owned the Reminder in Burt, was a bookkeeper for ASCS in Algona, managed motels for Travel Lodge and owned a dress shop "Fashions Unlimited" in Eagle Grove. Besides working, Velma had many other interests. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, playing Bridge or any other card games, traveling and fishing.

Velma was a member of The Order of the Eastern Star, Chamber of Commerce, served on several church boards for the United Church of Christ, a member of the United Church of Christ in Eagle Grove and the Presbyterian Church in Clarion.

Velma B. Holding of Conrad, Iowa, died July 1, 2016, at Oakview Nursing Home at the age of 103.

She is survived by her children, Ladell (Judy) Olson of Eagle Grove and Larry (Nancy) Olson of Conrad; son-in-law, Larry Holding of Eagle Grove; step-son, Bruce Holding; grandchildren, Jade (Jan) Olson, Jason (Michelle) Olson, Brad Holding, Vaughn (Linda) Holding, Ladawn (Ernie) Kiley, Valarie (Mike) Andrews, Brenda (Denis) Lessor, Brent (Darci) Olson, Lorry (Scott) Lewis; granddaughter-in-law, Myrna Olson; 21 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great grandchildren; sister Lois Bristow, as well as many other extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Paul Olson and Cliff Holding; daughter, Palma Joy Holding; step-son, Kaye Holding; grandson, Bruce Olson; brothers, Donald (Kathryn) Marlow, Pershing (Arlene) Marlow, Dillis (Cassie) Marlow; sisters, Sylvia (George) Harms, Lucille (Eric) Seegebarth and brother-in-law, Richard Bristow.
