Theodore "Ted" J. Kappes, age 82, of Las Cruces passed away Monday, June 6, 2016. He was born May 6, 1934 in Moline, Illinois to Marjorie and Clarence P. Kappes. Ted served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958, including 17 months in Korea. He earned a BA degree in speech from Saint Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa and a MA degree in speech and drama from Eastern New Mexico University in Portales. He taught college and high school courses from 1963 to 1993. Ted was a member of the Catholic Church, and active in the Knights of Columbus from 1968 until his death. He belonged to Las Cruces Council 1226, and Father Finnegan Assembly 0684. Ted's favorite hobbies were gardening, trout fishing, and making music with a blue grass band.

Survivors include two sisters, Juanita Iverson and Susan Swenson. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Angelene, in 2006.

Calling hours will begin at 2 PM Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at St. Albert the Great Newman Center, 2615 S. Solano, with the Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 3 PM with the Reverend Alex Ureña, Celebrant. Military honors will be accorded by a U.S. Army Honor Guard and the Marine Corps League – El Perro Diablo Detachment. Cremation will follow and inurnment of cremains will take place at a later date in St. Albert the Great Columbarium. Service arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Baca's Funeral Chapels and Sunset Crematory, 300 E. Boutz Road, Las Cruces.
