OBITUARY
Died, at his residence in Goldfield. Jan. 14th, Walter P. BELKNAP, in the 73rd year of his age. Funeral services were held at the house.Walter Perin Belknap was born at Randolph, Orange county, Vt., in 1814. Leaving home at the age of 22 he found employment in a tobacco and cigar store in Albany, N Y. Married in 1836, he returned to Vermont, to take charge of the old homestead, left him by his father at his death in the same year. In 1837 he disposed of this property, returned to Albany and resumed his old business. After a stay of one year he moved to Rochester, N. Y., and took up carpentering, which business he following until the year 1844. Leaving off city life, he removed to Stephenson county, Illinois, where he opened a farm. At this business he was very successful and soon amassed quite a property. Disposing of this farm in 1855, he moved to Lafayette county, Wis., where he again invested in land, this time buying a larger tract upon which he tolled for 13 years, making a fine farm. Again in 1860, after disposing of his interests in Wisconsin he removed to Wright county, Iowa, his last resting place. For two years previous to his death he has been almost a constant sufferer from a cancer, causing him at time excruciating pain, which he bore with unusual fortitude and patience. He leaves a large family, who deeply mourn his loss.
