April 28, 1837 --- August 30, 1902

After a brief illness with typhoid fever Wesley J. Carder died at his home on South Eastern Ave. Saturday at 9 o'clock a. m. He was in his 66th year and until this last sickness has been in rugged health and was well preserved for a man of his 'age.' He was a soldier of the civil war serving in the 53rd Indiana regiment. He told the writer that during his entire service through the war he never touched cards, whiskey or tobacco. Mr. Carder was a thoroughly good and honest man respected for his integrity of character and neighborly kindness by all who knew him. He was born in Ohio in 1837 and was married to his surviving widow in 1862 who with five of eight children survive him. He was a zealous member of the Wm. Griffith G. A. R. Post and the funeral was under that auspices. The funeral was in the Methodist church Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Southwell preached the sermon. He will be missed from the G. A.R. and church circles to which he was always faithful. The bereaved wife and children have the sympathy of all.
