November 26, 1942 --- May 7, 2016

Durwood Lee LaRue, age 73, of Belmond, passed away Saturday May 7, 2016 at the Iowa Specialty Hospital in Belmond. Visitation for Durwood will be held Thursday, May 12, 2016 from 3:00-5:00 P.M. at Dugger Funeral Home, 111 Luick’s Lane South, in Belmond. A memorial service will be held at 5:00 P.M. following visitation Thursday luncheon to follow. Burial will take place at a later date.

Durwood, son of Norman and Dena Steenhard LaRue, was born on November 26, 1942 on his grandparents farm near Meservey. Durwood attended and graduated from Dumont High School in 1961. After graduating he went on to Hamilton Business School and graduated in 1962. In 1965, Durwood was united into marriage to Patty Patterson. To this union, two children were born: Shawn and Dawn.

Durwood previously lived in South Carolina before moving back to Belmond due to health issues in 2011. He enjoyed cooking, gardening, quilting and cross stitching flour sack towels. He loved watching old westerns, especially John Wayne movies, and listening to old county music. Durwood loved his grandaughters and his grandson; whether it be by text or phone, he enjoyed hearing from them.

Durwood is survived by his daughter Dawn (Delwin) Barkema of Belmond, grandchildren Brittany and Brenna Barkema, and Travis LaRue and Zac Salazar of Henderson, NC, daughter-in-law Gail LaRue of Henderson, NC, brother Donald (Patty) LaRue of Ionia, IA, sister Norma (Butch) Whipple of Dows, sister-in-law Hattie LaRue of Dumont, and numerous other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his son Shawn, brother Dewayne, and parents Norman and Dena.
