KENSETT, Iowa — Darlene Ruth Butler, 87, Kensett, died Monday, May 2, 2016, at the Manly Specialty Center. A funeral service for Darlene will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 5, 2016, at the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett, with the Rev. Tom Martin officiating. Burial will be in the Elk Creek Lutheran Cemetery, rural Kensett. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. S., Northwood. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church. Those wishing to give a memorial in her memory may wish to consider memorial contributions to the Elk Creek Lutheran Church.

Darlene R. Butler was born on July 30, 1928, in Belmond, the daughter of William J. and Mabel F. (Veeder) Collins. Darlene moved with her family from Belmond to Mason City when she was 5 years old. She attended Mason City Community Schools, graduating from Mason City High School in 1946. She was united in marriage to Ralph Butler on June 16, 1950, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Ralph preceded her in death in July 1984.

Darlene worked at SS Kresge for four years in Mason City after high school, and worked as the church secretary for 17 years at the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, Kensett. Darlene enjoyed being a member of craft clubs, card club, and especially enjoyed playing 500, Bingo, raising her vegetable and flower gardens, and quilting with fellow church ladies. She was a faithful and active member of Elk Creek Lutheran Church, taught Sunday School for several years, held may offices in the ELCW, Kensett Senior Citizens, and 4-H leader for five years.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Linda (John) Sargent of Johnston, Van (Margie) Butler of Kensett, and Elton (Julie) Butler of St. Ansgar; her grandchildren, Joe Sargent, Ann (Matt) Gillotti, Jesse (Kylie) Butler, Janet (Carl) Rye, Scott Butler and fiancé Jessica Medlang, Ashley (Dexter) Duvall, and Mitchell Butler; her great-grandchildren, Crosby and Eva Butler, Sophie and Maggie Rye, and Tucker and Ryder Duvall; her brother, Duane Collins of Mason City; brother-in-law, Lyle (Corrine) Butler of Mason City; as well as many other extended family members and friends. Darlene was preceded in death by her parents, William and Mabel Collins; her husband, Ralph Butler; sister, Maxine McKiness; brother, David Collins; brother-in-law, Bob McKiness; and a brother-in-law, and sister-in-law, Elwin and Betty Pedelty.
