Steven Robert (Scratch) Ackerson, the son of Robert and Irene (French) Ackerson, was born November 11, 1951, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He was raised and educated in Eagle Grove. Scratch served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War—January 31, 1969, until his honorable discharge on September 11, 1971. On November 9, 1984, Scratch married Penny Lauer in Brush, Colo. The couple made their home in Eagle Grove, and they had two children, Stephanie and Devin. Scratch worked for Geise Construction, Promico, and 28 years for B & E Construction. He was a member of the V F W. Scratch was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan, and adored spoiling his granddaughter, Maya.

Scratch passed away on Sunday, December 23, 2012 at Southfield Wellness Community in Webster City, at the age of 61 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Ackerson, Irene Asche and Ed Asche, and a grandson, Charlie David Torres. Scratch is survived by his wife, Penny Ackerson of Eagle Grove, daughter Stephanie Sandoval and husband, Alex, of Eagle Grove, son, Devin Ackerson of Eagle Grove; granddaughter, Maya of Eagle Grove, brothers Richard Ackerson of Fort Dodge, Jim Ackerson of Tucson, Ariz., and Allan Asche of Eagle Grove, sister, Patty Reyes of Eagle Grove, mother-in-law, Dorothy Lauer of Waukee. brothers-in-law, Randy Lauer and wife, Debbie, of West Des Moines, Alan Lauer and wife Patti of Dayton. Minn., and John Lauer and wife, Jolene of Waukee, and 12 nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday, December 29 at 2 pm at the Foust Funeral Home in Goldfield. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
