Russell Robert Smith, the son of William and Dora Fisher Smith, was born April 6, 1896 in Eagle Grove. He attended the Eagle Grove High School, Iowa State University and Morningside College. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I. On February 12, 1919, he was married to Florence Fern Porter of Eagle Grove at her parents' home in Eagle Grove. He was in the automobile, banking, and farming business in the community and retired in 1949. He died Friday, July 22, at the University Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 81 years, three months and 16 days.
Russell is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Jean Halverson, Stockton, Calif, and Virginia (Mrs. C. H.) Clark, Eagle Grove; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, William C. and Dora Smith, and two brothers, Leslie and William Smith.
He was a member of the Methodist Church and a Mason for over 60 years. He was chairman of the U.S. Bond sales in Wright County during World War II. He served nine years on the Eagle Grove school board, and was a member of the American Legion and Za-Ga-Zig Shrine. He served 10 years on the Triple-A board.
Masonic services were held Sunday, July 24 at 8 p.m. at the Kastler-Babcock-DeYoung Funeral Home. Funeral services were held Monday, July 25, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church, Eagle Grove. Dr. Clarence W. Tompkins of Fort Dodge officiated and interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove.
