January 24, 1921 --- April 3, 2016

Dorothy Abbas, age 95, of Belmond, passed away Sunday, April 3, 2016 at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond. Funeral Services for Dorothy Abbas will be held Thursday, April 7, 2016 at 1:00 P.M. at Bethany Reformed Church in Belmond. Pastor Phil Arnold will officiate. Visitation for Dorothy Abbas will be from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Wednesday April 6, 2016 at the Dugger Funeral Home, 111 Luick’s Lane South, in Belmond.

Dorothy Boelman Abbas, daughter of Will J. and Titcia Frohling Boelman, was born on January 24, 1921 five miles east of Belmond (hospital farm). She attended and graduated from Belmond High School. Growing up, Dorothy helped a lot on the farm. She did housework, worked and drove tractors in the fields, and chores. On October 2, 1941, she married Henry B. Abbas. The couple moved to Franklin County for one year. They returned back to the farm east of Belmond. They farmed for 37 years until Henry’s death on March 2, 1978. Dorothy continued to farm for three years. Two years later, she bought a house in town, where she lived for 10 years before moving to the retirement center in 1994. Dorothy worked as a cook for the Belmond School for 10 years.

Dorothy enjoyed her home and her son, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Dorothy is survived by her son Gary Abbas of Des Moines, grandchildren and great-children: Aaron (Carrie) Abbas and children: Saylor, Spenser, Seth of Des Moines, Nathan Abbas and children: Avery, Emerson, Thaden of Des Moines, Beth (Chad) Sealine and children: Abigail, Corrin, Orien of Des Moines, sister Ruth Dorenkamp, brother Daryl Boelman, sister-in-law Marie Boelman, and numerous other family and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents Will J. and Titcia Boelman, husband Henry Abbas, daughter-in-law Roberta Abbas, sisters Thada and Henrietta, brothers Joyce, Herman and Bud, and in-laws.
